Rear oil seal on crankshaft

I am in the process of putting my WC back together. I have put in a set of new sleeves and bearings but have come across a problem with the rear seal. Furnished in the kit is a FelPro "rear main bearing seal" which consists of two felt half circles that appear way too thick to ever fit in the slots of the block and bearing cap. Can anyone shed some light on their installation? It woulf be very tough to squeeze them enough to get in the slot without ruining them.

Sounds like your kit may have had the D17
rear seal in it. They are twice as thick as
the wd/wc ones. Make sure to glue them into
place-Allis has always recommended 3M cement
and don't trim anything off the ends.

john, that is the correct seal it is a pain in the rear, but it will go in. also on the pan side smear it down with rtv silicon when you put the pan on. i didnt do that with my WD untill it leaked like hell, needless to say it wont drip now. good luck

Since I can't see what you have in hand, all I can tell you is that it is probably the correct seal. The seal has to be extra large to have the compression to keep the oil from leaking by. Use a small screwdriver to get it started down in the grove and then use a wood dowel flatened to pack the seal into place. That type of seal works like the old packing glands used in hyd. cyl. and water valves.
