Had new lining put on left brake due to fact platform was off for replacing bearing and some other work. Now brake is worse than before. No backward stopping power. Neither side is very good. Any suggestions? Also tractor is tricyle front and has much "play" in steering which is mostly in front axle.

They never will work well in reverse. The direction of reverse rotation tends to open
the band back up as you try to close it down.

Like this CA, our old WC at home never had good brakes in reverse either. What does one do for brakes (on CA) in reverse? Actually they're not that great forward. ..... Throw out a cement block with chain on it? Dan

What did the drum look like? Assuming the linings were installed correctly, it sounds like you don't have enough drum surface against the lining.
Oil on the linings will also cause the brake lining to a lack of grip. If the brake band was flatened out or did not have the correct curve you might have to tighten the adjusting screw more. The last set of linings that I purchased at CT had several rivit holes that were not counter sunk. The problem will be found in those little details that seem to get over looked.

Dick, appreciate your sharing info. Just this a.m. I was able to finally loosen adjustment screw so I could get more clearance for small brake lever. It was back touching against platform when brake was pushed. This may help. Now I have tractor completely disassembled for attempted restoration. Thanks again.
