I just changed the diesel fuel filter, and sediment bowl screens and gaskets on my AC-160 (3 cyl perkins diesel). After the change out, it doesn't want to run right. I followed the directions in the manual to purge air out of the lines. It starts fine, and runs for about 5-10 seconds before it stalls. I can save it from stalling out and keep it running if I crack open the upper vent plug on the injector pump to where there is a fast drip of fuel from the plug. What's my problem?

Hi Scott,

You may wnat to investigate your return line!
When a diesel return lines gets plugged or pinched it overfuels the pump and stalls it out.

Or it may be possible you may have an air leak with fuel system. If you have a spin on,you can't mess them up. But the sandwhich type with a center bolt and rubber gaskets at both ends and orings for sealing you may have caused the problem at any sealing point.

Thanks for the advice. Here's what I've done to date. I re-made all the connections I had previously made. No success. I checked the line that returns to the fuel tank. This line has good flow, but there is plenty of air in the fuel going through this line. Does this mean the obvious - that I have an air leak into my fuel system? If so, how do I find the leaking joint? When I was in the Navy, we would shellac joints under a vacuum or use saran wrap, or use a candle - how is it done on diesel lines? Thanks for any input. Hi Scott,

Allis liked to use rubber for seals on most of thier fuel lines. My experience would be to inspect the steel lines at the area of the rubber seal. These steel tubes have a tendency to be come crushed to a smaller dimension at this point.

Thanks a bunch Pat R. The rubber "seal" at the end of the recirc line from the injector back to the fuel filter had clogged the line. I probably gave the nut a quarter turn when I was putting everything back together, and that was the straw that broke the rubber off. The air in leak has misteriously stopped. Probably a tweak I did somewhere. Thanks again!!
