I am looking at a 1948 Allis Chalmers Model "C" to prchase for my girlfriend's birthday for $1500. I know what you are thinking, but seriously, she'd love it. She loves tractors and old tools as well as working on them and driving.

My question is, what are the pros and cons of this? What quirks does this tractor have? What are its good points and bad points? Any other comments would be greatly appreciated.

I have a "C" which is a good tractor. I hope your front steering is not worn because that has caused me a problem. Unless your girlfriend has arms like a wrestler, it might be tough to turn the thing frequently when mowing. (I wish they power steering.) Make sure the starter and electrical system turns it over well and that it doesn't miss under load. The comment about the short skirt is right on . . . you have to be a gymnast to get on and off. Personally I think the "B" is "cuter" as it's a little smaller but they're both fine tractors.

Good choice, I like the way you think. Only thing I can think of that might be bad is that it will be hard for her to be modest getting off and on it in a short skirt. They are easy to operate, easy to work on, and snappy little tractor to boot

They are neat little tractors and smaller people can handle them well. About the short skirt, I can count on one hand the number of women I've seen in the past year wearing a skirt, so I don't think that would be a problem, lol.

$1500 is probablly at the top end of what you should pay for a C unless it's completely restored. Does it have a magneto or a distributer conversion? Mags are original equipment. If it doesn't have good brakes it will cost at least $100 plus a full days work to clean a lifetime of crud outof the axles. Does It have hydraulics and will the load stay raised with the PTO stopped? Or ar you planning to just go to shows to ride in a parade?
