D-17 hand clutch slipping from low

I recently purchased a D-17 and am still figuring out the hand clutch. It slips out of low, sometimes on its own, but especially when under a load from bushhogging high grass. I have noticed this in 1st/3rd and 2nd/4th gears and at various RPMs. It has not slipped out of high gear for me (the forward setting). Also, what is the button for on the lever? I push it going in or out of gear just in case but have no idea what it does. Is the lever adjustable for play or tension or is this likely an expensive clutch problem. Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated. Andy

I had the same type of problem with my D-17 series IV. I found it was jumping out of low just by bouncing. I found that at the bottom of the lever on the inside is the spring and pin that the button actuates. It had filled over the years with grass, dirt. The button should have to be pushed to cross from low to high or visa versa. A good washing with wd-40 helped a lot.

Button is for latching in nuetral position.
If internal shim adjustment does not remedy
the problem it is then likely the pre load
plate ramps are worn-that means splitting her.

As I look more closely at the hand clutch I see that the button on top is connected to a rod with a pin on the bottom. That pin fits in a groove in neutral and presses against a plate in high or low. I can see that the pin is worn halfway down. In low, it slips because there is not enough of the pin for friction to hold it. Is there a way to replace that pin or the button/rod/pin assembly? Thanks Andy
