I have used 6v WD's since 1948 when we got our first new one. IF you keep the battery terminals and cable connections CLEAN and TIGHT there has never been any trouble starting. You also need HEAVY battery cables. What has happened over the years in many cases is the original heavy current battery cables have been replaced with cables designed for 12v and they can not provide the required amps at 6v. This is just my experience but could save you guys some bucks. If the WD is tuned right it will start on about 1/2 turn. We can start them with the hand crank that way but that is something I prefer not to do!

Hi Dave I have access to a kit for your tractor which includes alternator and brackets for about $93 you still would need 12 volt bulbs and delco-tron clip and a battery and resistor. You can reach me at 517-543-4770 days

The other posts are correct about the ignition and light resistors. I have Farmall that has been on 12 volts for 30+ years with the starter getting full voltage and no problems. The tractor starts real easy so it doesn't have to turn it over a lot. Maybe I am just luckey too.

If you want to get better cold start performance without having to change much, try replacing your 6v battery with an 8v. You can keep everything, including the light bulbs, the same. You can even adjust the regulator to charge at 8v.

Same wiring, same parts, improved starting.

You can look at replacing everything when/if you face the high cost of repairing or replacing your genterator. Until then, I'd go with 8v.

I have an antique Fordson Dexta tractor that I
am trying to find an electrical wiring harness.

I would appreciate any information as to where I
can get this part.

Thank you.

I installed a 12V battery, ballast resistor, and used a piece of #6AWG copper wire approximately 4 feet long between the battery and starter to drop the voltage applied to the starter during starting to approximately 8 volts. Length of the wire is determined by trial and error - start with a piece of wire about 5 feet long. Use a volt-ohm-meter to measure voltage at the starter while spinning the engine. Keep trimming the wire until you get the voltage you want.

I have not yet modified the charging system, but plan to soon.

I am not aware of any kits available, but I will check into it for you. 12 volt batt,alternator,delco-tron clip and a little fabrication of new brackets and most likley you will have to come up with a belt. And a ballast resistor would be a good idea.

Battery and alternator are a given but the delco-tron clip is for ease of wiring using a typical delco alt internal regulated 3 wires and your done and charging. ballast to knock down the voltage going to the mag or distributor, if not it will burn points fast!

Your next problem is with a 12 volt system is that the starter is designed for six so this means you will be replacing stater drives about possibly 1 a year depending on use.
