WD-45 identification

How can a person tell for sure if a tractor is a WD-45? I have been told that the WD engines have a bolt on cover on the right side of the engines and the WD-45's do not(just a solid casting). While shopping for a WD-45 I have looked at many that I think are WD's with the 45 decals.

Jim, If the engine has no side cover it is a WD-45 engine. But..... not infrequently you will find a WD-45 engine in a WD. Many people believe if it has the curved shifter it is a "45", but....the curved shifter was introduced on the WD with Ser.#127007. Distributer vs Magneto is not the way to go either. I believe the switch from Magneto to Distributer was made on the WD's with Ser.#136318. Besides, many early WD's were retrofitted with distributers. The tractor serial # is probably the most accurate way of identifying the model. Numbers beginning with 146607 are WD-45s. It seems that putting WD-45 decals on WD's is quite prevalent. It's a little like all the "SS" badges installed on Chevy Novas and Chevelles. When I'm "sizing-up" these tractors, my eyes go first to the shifter, then the block and finally the Ser. number.
