My Dad and I have a '38 B, '40 B, '44 C, and '50 IB. I have researched the engines and everything that I have read indicates the B's should have BE engines and the C and IB should have CE engines. All 4 of ours have engines that begin with AM. The next numbers are 2916, and the last two digits vary for each tractor. The only place that I have seen an AM engine mentioned is the Tractor Registry at this web page. Is the AM a replacement part, or am I reading the wrong number? Is this engine supposed to be found in the B, IB, and C? Does anyone know a good source for this type of engine information? I have the parts, service, and operators manuals. Thanks for the help with this.

The numbers you are referring to are casting numbers. The numbers you want to find are located on the block flange where the pipe comes out of the oil pump or by the air cleaner. (stamped in) If you have a C operating instruction manual look on page 31 lower right picture. (engine serial number) I am looking for inforation on the different parts used such as the cast iron valve covers, cast iron pan, and cast iron bull gear covers. When and why! My 1945 C has all three and I found another C with all three but the serial number had been removed.

AM stands for allis milwaukee it is a casting # not the engine # the engine # is located on a boss on the bolting flange of engine just below & behind air cleaner.i own a B high crop that has a CA engine it is late production 1955.i think allis used whatever engines available at the time of manufacture whether it was b,c, or ce engine hope this helps. huck
