Some of you may remember my serries of posts about the WC that didn't want to start. This tractor ran good for a while then started missing. Then it got progressively harder and harder to start. Finally it simply refused.Cleaned the big rust out of the tank, replaced the plastic fuel hose and auto filter with copper line and a sediment bowl. I rebuilt the carb, found a sunken float and lots of rust. Then it would backfire thru the carb. After a couple of seconds raw fuel ran out of the carb. I eventually did get it to start by retarding the timing as far as I could, but it only ran for a few seconds. Many of you helped with good advice on the fuel dumping. What I found was:
1. The needle seat was not quite set in the carb, allowing gas to run past the threads. A gentle clean-up with a tap, a dab of pipe dope, and a new gasket, along with firm installation with a screwdriver big enough to hit both sides, and the fuel duping while not cranking is fixed.
2. The fuel dumping while cranking is a signal of no fire, no cranking vacuum, and too much choke (duh!).
I found the carb to manifold nuts needed to be REAL tight to seat the gasket on the 60 year od flange. This solved my no vacuum situation. Then, when you stop cranking, if you use too much choke, the fuel will drop back down and run out of the carb weep hole. Just go have a cold one (your choice of type) and it'll dry out.
3. Fix the ignition system. I cleaned the points, installed a new condensor, and got no fire. I pulled the mag, rotated the engine to #1 and the timing mark on bottom of the flywheel (hint - a little white paint is really helpful in finding this after cranking). I then loosened and repositioned the mag and did get the tractor to start. Yesterday I got the carb fixed, and then had no
fire. I pulled the mag, cleaned and regapped the points, checked the connections, then rotated the mag BACKWARDS until the drive tangs lined up. I installed the mag, then set the rotor to cover and installed the cover and cap. Just for grins, I rechecked the plug wires. The original owner had #3 and #4 reveresed - the tractor had been running on 2 cylinders!! Apparently when it loaded up with fuel it flooded the running cylinders and that is what caused the "miss". I put the wires right, turned the fuel on, hit the starter, gave it a little choke, and she started right up. Thanks for all the help, both to my posts and the related ones. Now - what's it worth? PTO, implement lift, have a belt pulley, hood cut for oval muffler, fenders bobbed, rims good, tires badly weathered but hold air, electric start, new hoses, no water leaks, overall battered but servicable, bright orange paint (most places) with new decals. Is $650 wishing? Or should I part it out (Eastern Michigan area)?
