My late model WD45 (1955), has broken governor weights and I also need to replace the governor gear. I have conflicting ways to correct this problem. The salvage yard says the grear can be pressed off and pressed back on without any problem. Ordering the cover gasket at the local Allis dealer, they say the shaft/gear part should be replaced as a whole unit, due to possible gear slippage. Which is correct?

The gear is held by a half moon key to the shaft.
Rotate the engine to Number 1 cylinder TDC compression and remove the governor and distributor assembly. Remove the c-clip in front of gear and pull off and replace the gear. Put the assembly back on with the rotor pointing to number one spark plug wire.

All, Thanks for the replys. My WD45 does not have a c-clip. It is a pressed on governor gear and according to the Allis I&T manual, the gear must be heated to a blue color to pull/press the gear off/on the shaft to not create any scratch marks. I opted to replace the shaft/gear/weight assembly and it did work for a couple minutes. The lock nut by the distributor access panel came slightly loose which caused excessive endplay. This caused the replacement weights to hit the front fork and the weights/gear broke again. I got a suggestion from Karl about using blue locktite to keep this nut from moving. I will try this on my next try. vern in Mn

I have never had the gear off of the governor shaft, and they are usualy sold as a unit, but I can't believe that a gear that has to stay in time would not be keyed. If I had the parts in hand I would try. You can buy a new governor, weights, shaft, and gear for around 160.00 through the farm stores.
