I am working on my grandfather's D14. We started it today for the first time in 8 years. She is running, but rough. We replaced the points, rebuilt the carb, cleaned the fuel lines (the gas tank is still very dirty). The engine checked out okay, no damage. We had to hot wire it because we lost the key (problems?) The pto still works fine. This has the potential to be a solid tractor again..just have a few questions.
Is the 6volt battery connected backwards?
should the rough running cease after the gas tank settles?
what fluids should I replace and what do I use?
any tips would be appreciated. I do have the manual....I am 30 years old and this is the first time my grandfather has let me touch his tractor.

After you have replaced the plugs, if it's still running rough, take a look at the plug wires. If you can have your tractor in a completely dark place or near to it, start it up and look at the wires. If they are badly deteriorated you should be able to see fire jumping from wire to wire or to nearby metal. Also look at the distributor cap at the same time. If it has cracks or bad places, you might see fire jump there. Same thing for the coil.

Dan,
The first thing I would do is drain the tank and get all the rust and trash out of it and the rest of the fuel system. New plugs would be good too.
Fresh, clean gas and you should be ready to go to work.

I would try a new set of plugs before I did any thing else other than clean the tank. Make sure you don't hear a hissing in the exaust.

Hey guys, thanks for the tips....The tractor runs perfectly...very smooth..
The problem is that now when I push the start button, it goes "click..click" no turnover at all. maybe a bad starter? I do have a mysterious short somewhere that keeps killing the battery.. Also fluid comming out of the gear shifter? too much fluid? Thanks your tips really help alot.
