I'm trying to make sure the timing is correct on my 1953WD45. I know that the timing mark is on the flywheel. However, I cannot find a cover that exposes this mark. Neither of my manuals shows the coverlocation. I have searched the bell housing from top to bottom, taken the clutch inspection plate off of the bottom, removed the starter but I'm stumped: I can't find a flywheel timing mark inspection cover anyplace. Maybe this tractor doesn't have one? So how do you set the timing?

The WDs do not have a TDC mark on the flywheel (only an "F" {Fire} mark at 30 degrees BTDC), but the WD-45s are supposed to have both an "F" and a "DC" mark. Maybe because your's is an early WD-45, it lacks the "DC" mark? Anyway, the marks are visible thru the small inspection port on the flywheel inspection cover at the bottom of the bellhousing, but if you're looking for the "F" mark when #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke, you probably won't be able to see it. I marked the "F" mark with chalk and was able to use my timing light to set the time on both my distributer equipped WD and my WD-45. It's a little inconvenient since you can't move the distributer while watching the mark as you can with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Brian G.

Dave is right. To make it easier on my WD, I welded a small bar to the front engine brace and filed a mark on the front crank pulley (once I found it on the flywheel). Now I can use my timing light with no problem.

Not certain about the WD 45 but I think it's the same as my WD. Remove clutch inspection plate on bottom of flywheel housing. Turn engine until #1 piston is on compression and then look for the letter F stamped on the flywheel to be near the center of the inspection plate opening. This is sort of an eyeball thing cause there is no real mark to line up the F with except your interpretation of the "center" of the opening. You may have to clean off the flywheel some to see the mark and it is not real easy to see. A bright light helps. Once you have it "eyeball" centered proceed with the mag or distributer timeing as the manual states. I have mag ign. I found the tricky part is lining up the gears in the mag. Not difficult, but not too clear to me in the manual.
