I just purchased a 1966 D-17, Series IV tractor. I believe the PTO is not live. Should I install an overriding clutch or is there a way I can use the hand clutch to prevent problems? Thanks.

I have the same tractor (good tractor). Over-running coupler isn't really necessary, but I use a "quick-release" O.C. when I mow or bush hog. That way if I need to stop quickly, stepping on the clutch will do it.

The hand clutch allows you to stop movement of the tractor while maintaining power to the PTO. The tough part is remembering to use the hand clutch. Get in the habit of using the hand clutch to stop and start every time so that it becomes second nature and you should be fine.
