WD engine question

I have what appears to be a 1951 WD. Serial number WD78547 although the tractor has WD45 decals on it. The engine does not have the lifter cover plates and the tractor has a straight shifter not curved. The number on the engine is 45-49669-6. What gives? Also I bought points and distributor cap at local Allis dealer. I have a screw down cap on my engine and the parts guy said all Allis tractors have a clip on cap. The parts dont fit. Have I got an odd ball or is the parts guy not knowlageble enough to help me. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Mike, I think if you look more closely, you'll find that the last "6" in the engine serial # is really a "G". The number indicates it is a WD-45 engine of '55 or '56 vintage. It's not too uncommon to find a "45" engine in a "WD". If a farmer had to replace an engine, why not spend a few bucks and get a real boost in performance at the same time? I have a WD & a 45 and the difference is impressive (even though the WD has the overbore crater pistons and sleeves). Brian G.

Sounds like someone put a WD-45 engine on a WD to me. Could be an automotive distributor or something.
