I'm desperate for help! I have a WD45 gas that will not start. It has rebuilt M/S carb, new points, plugs. I have checked compression and all seems good for each cyl. Plenty of spark but won't start even with ether shot. Engine seems to turn over normal and timing marks are spec. The engine started this spring once but quit almost right away with a small backfire and i haven't been able to start it again. I have had this tractor for five years without any significant starting problems. Any clues what I should try next short of tearing the engine down? BTW, there is no evidence of any thing abnormal in the oil, no leaks, etc, it doesn't hesitate like it has jumped valve time or dropped a valve. It just won't start!

Getting down to basics, there are two things an engine needs to run. Fuel and spark. Start with one or the other, determine which is missing. If you have both then go to ign timeing. Correct firing order etc, Stay simple at first, work through it in simple steps. When you find which element, fuel or spark is missing and not in the right place at the right time, work with what is missing and the possibility of why. These old machines are pretty simple, you just got to think them through.

Dave,

I know that this may sound silly, but my 1950 Model B had its distributor installed 180 degrees opposite from the way it is supposed to be. #1 is at 7 o'clock instead of 1 o'clock. It was that way when I got it. It runs great. So I am not going to change anything. Make sure that your distributor rotor is pointing to the #1 wire when the #1 cylinder is at TDC.

Good Luck.

If you've already tried this, then just disregard it. Try taking out all 4 plugs and manually injecting about 2-3 cc of gas in each cylinder. If there's fire to even one plug, it should fire up when you start it. If it runs for a short time and dies, there's a fuel problem. If it just backfires, it's either out of time or firing order is wrong. Good luck and hang in there! RC

If the carb is letting fuel into the engine and you have spark at the plugs it has to be out of time. A rebuilt carb does not mean that it is letting fuel in properly but I would guess from your post that it is out of time. With the timeing mark in the center of the inspection hole, take the distributor cap off and make sure that rotor is pointing to the terminal that leads to the plug that is to the front of the tractor (#1 plug ) I have talked to people that thought that #1 plug was the one at the back of the engine because it was the first one you come to when you get off the seat. ( not so ) It is not likly that the valves are out of time unless you broke a tooth on the cam gear.

Dave, Gotta ask the question, is there spark to the plugs? What have you checked there? Once had a distributer that had to be replaced before the vehicle would run, I fixed it twice, it broke within a few minutes each time, guess the shaft was off a little.

Yes, there is spark at the plugs, I also checked the coil and verified voltage there as well as at the points and the dist. seems normal in rotation,
etc.

You say you have spark at the plugs, but do you have spark under compression, try a new set of plugs, and not Champion, try AC.
