I am looking at a 1964(?) AC D-17, series IV tractor. I test drove it and heard a noise when braking and turning in a small area. The noise is a "wump, wump, wump" (pardon the technical jargon) and I noticed it when at mid throttle and using the brake to assist my turn. The rear axle high and offset from the center of the rim. I don't know what the problem is. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andy

Ditto Phil's advise, but also check the rails and locks on the power adjust wheels. If the cams and rails are worn the rim will work back and forth and hit the stops making a clacking noise.

Andy,
I don't know a lot about the D17, but it could be a bad brake drum or wheel/axle bearing. I assume from your post that you don't hear the noise while turning without using the brakes. If the noise was there while turning without the brakes I would suspect a bearing in the differential.

Phil
