After I dicovered that my tranny was low on oil, I parked it and yesterday added tranny oil. Now it sounds great, but the hand clutch doesn't completely release anymore. Now if I try to reverse while mowing, it grinds the gears pretty bad. Did I overfill or use the wrong oil? I used 80w90. I filled it till the oil was about 1/2 inch from fill hole above the pto gearing. Hope it isn't permanent.

Thanks for any advice in advance

Chuck

You used the right oil. I would guess any problem with the hand clutch not completely releasing should have been evident before you added oil. Most hand clutches tend to "creep" when the oil is cold. Are you changing gears using the hand clutch? Although some people disagree, I believe gears should be changed using only the foot clutch. If your hand clutch "snaps-in" crisply, doesn't slip under heavy load and has only a minimal amount of drag when released, I wouldn't be too concerned. Brian G.

I agree with Brian. I grew up using a WD, and we never used the hand clutch to shift gears. Even if the tractor was stopped using the hand clutch, we would still use the foot clutch to shift.

I believe my original manuel for our WD even says that the foot clutch (engine clutch) has to be used to change gears. The hand clutch (transmission clutch) should only be used to stop ground movement.

When you push in the foot clutch it stops the pto. I thought that hand clutch was so you could have a live pto when changing gears.

yep the foot clutch stops everything, pto, hydraulics and motion. the hand clutch stops motion. this is as close to true live power as you get on these old machines. It was not meant for changing gears, it was meant for feeding your pto powered implement behind the tractor. you can keep full power to the pto and hydraulics while slowing or stopping your forward movement to allow the implement to catch up with the crop conditions.
