WD45 brake lining replacement

Help: The manual made it sound so easy. Unscrew the rod from the brake pedal to the brake. Right. Wouldn't budge, squirted with WD-40 then it twisted off. The manual then says something like remove keeper screw and take out the main pin that the shoes pivot about. I can see this pin through the hole in the bottom but can't get to it. I am unable to get any of the parts out through the top. I suspect the twisted off brake rod is hanging up or something. Would appreciate a more detailed description of how to go about this.

Dan, I helped a friend get them out on a D17 and the setup is the same . After soaking them repeadedly, we used a long pry bar behind the shoulder and an impact wrench with a hammer attachment on it and brought them out . Good luck and let us know how you do.

Thanks to all for help on the WD45 brakes. I'm waiting patiently as suggested for WD40 to work its magic.

The two keeper pins are located on the outside of the rear end at the bottom outside of the brake housing underneath the axel housing. They can be a bear. If you are not in a big hurry, keep a can of penetrant and every time you go by, give each a good shot of fluid. Eventually they will come. Patience is critical.

You'll find that the "patience of Job" won't be enuf in some cases as has been attested to many times in the past on this forum. Be prepared for a real struggle and count yourself lucky if you don't have to cut each pin off with a torch and drive the outer half into the brake cavity to remove it. When we did my brother's WD, one came out easy. The other one was missing the end after someone had broken it off sometime in the past. We drilled and tapped the end and used a grade 8 bolt as a puller (a grade 5 wasn't up to the task). It finally came out after some serious heat was applied to the housing with an Acetylene torch.
