Model B backfires

I recently restored my grandfathers 1948 Model B a few weeks back. I have been running the tractor without fail since that time, that is until Friday. I have been having problems with plugs fouling out every 5-10 gallons, but when changed the tractor runs great again. Anyway... On Friday I couldn't get the tractor to pop-off, in fact I had an occasional backfire with a real pretty flame shooting out of the exhaust! I assumed that it's out of time, so I checked the rotor alignment with the drive gear, and the marks line up. I cleaned the points and checked the gap, everything looks A-OK, and she still backfires!! My question is this... If the tractor is out of time, HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?? Did the mag somehow jump a gear?? (For the record, the mag is new!!) Thanks for your help!!

Loved the "flamed" look in the photo, no doubt caused by light through the trees. My wife liked it and now wants me to do the same, in paint, when I put mine together. It will go well with the black accents and polished stainless fasteners.

On the backfire, yes the choke plate, also pull the breather tube, turn the fuel on, and see if fuel starts running out of the carb after a few minutes. This indicates the float is sunk or the needle is not seating.

For the timing, reset it using the complete procedure. If you find you have to move the mag a tooth, I would suspect a broken tooth also. It does happen.

It is hard to tell without opening the engine up. If the engine was stuck before you rebuilt it and some one tried to jurk it around to free the engine up, they could have stressed one of the three gears under the front cover. If it had valves stuck and the pushrods didn't bend it would have a great deal of strain on the cam gear. If a tooth cracked the engine could run for some time before it would let go and cause it to jump time.

Just for the heck of it, check to see that your choke plate is actually opening up all the way. That could cause a rich air/fuel mixture, and possibly severe backfiring. I once had a bent choke plate that caused the same problem. I chased the timing problem around for quite a while till I convinced myself to look elsewhere. Good luck!
