I got a new battery for it today. After a couple of kicks to the starter it started right up. I drove it and it ran good. Once I turned it off, it labored to roll over and wouldn't start. I also noticed smoke coming off the positive terminal, and the negative and positive wires felt hot. Anyone got any suggestions for me?

The "smoke" coming off the battery terminal connection should tell you something. Although the starter may have a problem and causing excessive amperage draw, if the terminal and connector were properly cleaned, fitted and tightened, there should be no heat there whatsoever. Brian G.

Sounds like its time to have the starter rebuilt. Most likely the bushings are worn out and the armature is rubbing on the pole shoes inside. If you feel handy, somebody like NAPA can get you new brushes and bushings. Its pretty easy to put these parts in. Hope this helps, Brian.
