Fuel System Problems

I parked my 1950 A-C Model B the other day and it was running fine. Yesterday, I poured in 5 gallons of fresh gas and started the tractor to cut part of my pasture. The tractor started missing and sputtering at every speed from slow idle to fast idle. Occasionally it would smooth out and run OK for a few seconds, then begin sputtering again.

There were rust particles in the sediment bowl. So I emptied those out, cleaned the bowl, opened the valve and let fuel flow out. It seemed to flow at a good, constant rate. Then I disconnected the fuel line at the carb. and opened the valve and let the fuel flow. It seemed to flow well to the carb.

Now I am thinking that some of the rust may have gotten past the sediment bowl screen and is clogging the carb.

My Question: I know that this fall that I will have to clean the tank and seal it to keep the rust from being a problem in the future. Is there anything that I can put into the fuel system to clean it out so that I can wait to the Fall to take the carb apart? Since I have a flexible rubber fuel line, should I put an auto fuel filter in line between the sediment bowl and the carb?

An inline filter is a real benifit - things usually get by the screen in the sediment bowl, but never past an inline filter. The ingition is a good point too. Could be the condenser gone bad, or possibly the points have finally had it. If there was rust in the bowl, a can of carb cleaner is a must to get all of the orfices clean in the carb.

A bad condenser will make it run bad. Before tearing the carb apart, check the ignition first. There is far less that can go wrong in the carb than in the the ignition. Look over the points and dist cap, and wires. Fouled plugs also cause trouble. Through trial and error, I have found AC Delco 45 plugs to be the best in this application. An inline fuel filter can't hurt. Make sure the ignition is up to snuff first. Brian

I would bet that you have some junk floating around and stopping up the inlet to your sediment bowl. It would be best to take the sediment bowl out and let some gas wash out some of the stuff.

Sounds like some water maybe got into the carb. There should be a pet cock at the bottom of the carb. open it up and let some stuff out. Clean the heck out of the bowl and screen filter and try that. If it works, the next smart step would be to cut the metal fuel line a few inches from the carb and install a cheap but VERY useful inline fuel filter. If properly maintained, nothing big enough to clog the jets will ever get through. This has worked for me, anyway. Good luck, RC
