Low oil pressure on '49 8N

My 8N starts, runs, & drives perfectly, but after warm-up, the oil pressure drops to 0. I removed the external oil lines & no obstructions found. We replaced the rod & main bearings with no improvement in oil pressure. Then, I installed a high volume oil pump, only to have oil pressure drop off when hot to almost 0. On a 80 degree day on start up, it will show 25 at slow idle, & 35 at fast idle. Any ideas whats wrong? Can I hurt it by running this way?

About 43 years ago one of my first off the farm jobs was cultivating corn with a 2N Ford. After I made about three rounds I noticed the oil pressure dropping. Dad was always a stickler about watching gauges on a tractor, and oil pressure was one thing he beat into my head early. I headed to the barn with that thing while it still showed something on the gauge, only to be told "don't worrry about it, it's been doing that for years". I cultivated corn with it all summer, and the darn thing is probably still running. By the way it also cured me from ever wanting a set of rear mounted cultivators, too. Just brought back some memories, and I couldn't help responding. Paul

When you put in new bearings, did you check the clearance with plastigauge? If the crank is too worn, new bearings won't help much. Definetly check the bypass valve for being stuck open or a broken spring. Good luck, Brian.

Ken,
Another source of the problem could be the cam bearings. Check the relief valve first since it's so much easier, then check the cam bearings.

Ken,
I think you got the wrong forum, but I have one of those grey things too. Check the oil pressure relief valve -- it's up on the front of the engine, check IT manual for exact location. Ridiculously easy to change, and it would cause the problem you are describing.

Thanks a lot for your advice, even though I had the wrong forum. I put in a new pressure relief valve & spring & no change. Also the fellow that was nice enough to help me with the new bearings did not use any gauge, just put the new ones on. There may lie the problem, & if not, I'll check the cam bearings.
