I am looking for a starter ring gear for my 1957 Allis Chalmers D-14. I have called about 5 places and they don't have it. They can't even order it. They can order ring gears for the B, C, WC, WD and D-17 but not the D-14. The part number printed on the gear is 233305 3 There is a bit of space between the 5 and the last 3 so I don't know for sure if the 3 is part of the number. Any suggestions of favorite Allis parts suppliers or other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

On automotive ring gears, we used a punch and hammer to get it off the flywheel. Then we turned it over - exposing mostly unused teeth. We then heated it up with a torch to get it started, and put on the rest of the way with punch and hammer. On occasion, the teeth were broke completely off and the ring gear was obviously junk. I suppose I might want a new one on there too, as much work as it is to get to it in the first place.

If you can not find one, you usally can make the one you have work. - Look at it - the "bad" spots are usally only in two spots, for a few inches, 180 degrees opposite of each other. This is because the engine usally stops in one of two spots, because of compression etc. The trick is to carefully heat, pry, heat, pry the old ring gear off. If you can do this without breaking it, you have it made. (Make sure you mark where it was on both the flywheel and ring). Now re-heat it and mount it a quarter of a turn (90 degrees) from where it was. You have now installed a "new ring gear where the starter usally engages. Once in a great while the engine will stop on one of the bad spots, if so just turn the engine by hand a quarter of turn or so. But most of the time you will have the same results as if you had put a new gear on. I do not claim this is as good as a new ring gear, but if you can not find one, this will buy you a lot of "starts".
