I have a A/C "C" model that won't start(A little worn??). I've opened up the cap to check the rotor and can't see anything wrong. Could the points/condenser be bad?? I've checked the spark plug for spark(pulled the spark plug, cranked over the motor with the plug close to the motor- no spark.) I'm trying to get it changed over to 12V. Is it worth scapping this set-up and going possibly with electronic ignition?? Anybody's help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

WE Have had a lot of allis tractors over the years, and had the same problem. Figured it out my self one day. I noticed that it would start real easy if I rolled it off. So I thought about why this was happening. I put a double pole solenoid on it so it would get full voltage when I hit the starter switch . Fired every time after that, just as soon as I hit the starter. From then on I put one on every tractor we had;except of course;the diesels. This fixed them all!! Try this and good luck!!! Since you don't have any spark at cranking speed seems likely you have an ignition problem. I don't know if you have a magneto or battery ignition system. In either case FIRST CLEAN THE POINTS. After that, if it's a mag, check for proper impulse coupling action. You should hear a definite "click" when cranking. If you don't the tractor will run OK but won't start worth beans. Assuming the impulse is OK, next try replacing the condenser and points. The proper timing of the rotor is explained in the reprint manuals available or in the I&T manuals. If you have to go any further into a magneto than this you might want to have one of the people who advertise in the various magazines do it for you. Battery ignitions are easier to work on. If the points and condenser replacemant doesn't fix it the only thing left is the coil or the wiring, both are easy to replace. Good luck, Paul

Thanks for the help ,Paul. I've got a magneto on my "C". Sorry for leaving that out. Anyway, is the clicking noise coming from the impulse coupling to the motor? I'm assuming it supposed to. When you mention battery ignition, are you talking about conventional spark set-ups. I don't see a coil on this on so I'm assuming it's a magneto set-up. Thanks again for answering all my novice questions. Brett

Brett, Yes you should hear a clicking noise at cranking speed from your magneto. That's the impulse coupling which is a spring loaded device that allows the magneto to spin fast enough at cranking speed to generate a good hot spark. I assume you still don't have any spark, but in your letter you mentioned holding the plug close to the engine. Try grounding the shell of a new plug against a bare metal spot on the block. You should see a spark jump the gap, if not try a new plug wire(not the carbon type, a real copper wire). Maybe your trouble is bad wires. If no spark with a known good plug and known good wiring, the problem is in the magneto(just for kicks, try disconnecting the ground wire to your ignition switch, switch might be bad). Let me know how you make out. Paul
