My sons Ca starter grinds sometimes when You try to start it. it has been converted to 12 volt. it dosen't do it all the time,but it sure dosen't sound good when it does. could this be a worn out bendex drive in the starter. my wd45 has been converted and i don't have a problem with it,so i don't think it is because it is turning faster. thanks for any help Mark & Andy

mark, if the teeth are bad on flywheel you can remove the pointed bolt and push starter all the way in,retighten with bolt that is flat on tip if starter works ok you can drill new spot on starter and use original bolt. worked for mine

It could be the bendex but probably the teeth are wore down on the ringgear. Take the setscrew out of the bellhouseing that holds the starter in place, pull the starter out and look in at the ring gear and that will tell the story. The ring gears wear in a very short area so you will be able to tell wheather or not you have a bad gear. A change to a 12 volt system would not have any thing to do with this. A bad bendex can cause the ring gear to wear out prematurely.
