My WD-45 has been converted over to 12 volt and I have replaced the spring in it twice within 4 months because they were bad. The person at the parts store said that this is because of being changed over to 12 volt. Is there anything I can do to prevent this same problem occuring time and time again? Thank you in advance!!!

Our 45 is converted to 12 volts and we have broken a number of springs over the years. We also used to break the end housing that holds the starter drive. Years ago, when the starter quit, we had a shop rebuild it and rewire it for 12 volts. This helped, though we have broken a couple of springs since. I had the starter apart to replace brushes this spring, and compared it to a 6 volt one out of an old chevy (I needed to use the tractor, and the brushes from the Chev fit.) It looks like all they did was put the field windings in series on the 12 volt, instead of parallel on the 6 volt. My brother thinks the springs are more prone to break if you have the spark advanced too far. The engine fires too soon and kicks back, breaking the spring. You might want to check this.
Were you able to buy just the spring? If so, please let us know the part #. Everywhere I have gone only has the starter drive, they don't list the spring alone. Thanks, Freddy

witch spring are you having problems with?
if your having trobule with the relay swich
bypass and use a IH starter button

I have had my WD 45 converted to 12 volt for over 10 years using the original 6 v starter and have not had a problem with the spring. My tractor sets outside all the time in moist humid weather and occassionally I have to clean my electical cable connections before it will crank. My opinion is that there is something else wrong.

The original 6v starter will work fine, if not better, on 12v. The only thing is that you can't crank for long periods of time, or it'll heat up and things will start to burn.
