Brake pin on D17

Friend has a D17 that needs new brakes, but we can't get the bottom anchor pin that pivots the bands to BUDGE. Used PB Blaster, etc.The manual says if the pin can't be removed to drill and tap the pin and use a slide hammer.Anybody got a better suggestion than that?

I always put anti-sieze on the pin when I put it back in so I don't have that trouble the next time.

We run into one from time to time that "just
won't budge" too. The center of the pin can be
torched out and then the end driven in & another chunk torched out. The outside end will then drive through & the inside end will slide
out- the inside end never sticks - just the outside end where it goes thru 2 layers. We can
provide any parts you may need. E mail or ph

Thanks for the reply and info. We got the one "easy " one out by putting the lip of a crow bar under the shoulder and used an impact tool with a hammer end on it. May have to use the torch method on the other one.

That torch method sounds like what my brother might do but that would only be the last resort. The way that has always worked for me is to take a steel strap about 2 feet long, 1 1/2" wide and 1/4" thick, drill a hole the size of the pin, slip the strap over the head of the pin and weld it. Now you try to rotate it, may have to peen with a hammer or even use some heat but the strap will let you get a prize on the pin. You should be able to lube, rotate and prize the pin out. I think you'll be able to figure out a way to make this work when you see this set up. You can then grind away the strap and weld to salvage the pin and reuse.
