My wd starts and runs fine for a few minutes then it will just quit as if you shut it off, and sometimes backfires just before shutting off. I have pulled the carb and cleaned it, but made no difference. I need more ideas. thanks

Dennis, I have experienced the plugged gas line on several WD45's over the last 25 years but I never had the backfiring problem. Chris mentioned poking a coat hanger up the tube. I even carried a small bulb in my tool box and would have to blow the junk back in the tank. I finally solved the problem by taking the tank off, cleaning in out with a solvent, putting a chain inside and rolling it around. This cleaned the rust particles off the inside of the tank. You didn't mention whether you had a distributor or magneto. If a magneto, you could have a problem there to cause the backfiring.

If that continues to be a problem and the tank doesn't leak, just insert a 3/4" piece of copper tubing of the proper size to just fit tightly into the top of the sediment bowl where it screws into the tank. This will stop the sediment in the bottom of the tank from entering the bowl and plugging the screen. The only drawback is there will be a quart or so of unusable fuel in the bottom of the tank. This little fix works real well on older rusty tanks. Good luck. TED

We had to scrape a better ground for the
battery. Take screw out from under key,
then pull ignition switch up and out.You can
see the wires.Scrape up and down were battery
box and ignition box touch when they come together.Dad and my self spend the biggest part
of a day to eliminate other things. We have done
many times now.If this is your problem send cash
no check.Ha!Ha!Have a good day.

Thanks for the tips. The sediment screen was plugged. I haven't had time to run it yet but I do beleave this was the problem.

Dennis had the same type problem with my WD-45. Try checking the sediment bowl under the fuel tank. I found the wire screen in the top of the bowl was not letting enough fuel to the carb. Cleaned it out and now seems to run fine. Good luck

If the screen turns out to be clean, also check the inlet to the sediment bowl (where it screws into the tanks). Any rust that breaks loose will clog this small whole. This has happened to me several times. I take a small rod (like a straightened out coat hanger) and probe through the filler whole in the tank. If this does turn out to be the problem, it is time to think about sealing the tank.

Another thing that could cause similar symptoms is a failing condensor. They turn off like someone flipped a switch when they warm up if they are going bad. Its a cheap test to just replace it.
