Anyone out there that can tell me the right way back to smooth engine running. I took the magneto
cap off not realizing that the timing was based on this possition. I have the service manual but I would probably get more help from a blind man.
the manual says that the timing order is 1-2-4-3
does that mean from the mag to the block I put the spark plug wires in this order or do I just put them in the order of 1-2-3-4. After this point I need to set the gear in the mag to the bull gear. there are no marks for timing and I can't find where to begin. Do I start by putting the engine a TDC on 1 and then where does the rotor point to 1 or before or after. is there a book that the real repair men use or do I just have to learn this by trial and error. perplexed Preacher!

Best suggesting is to look at the post one page down on a similar problem with a WC, Dick L's response is as clear as either my Allis manual or the I&T (which I highly recommend for all other areas)the behavior is the same for WC or B. Rotate the engine to compression on the front cylinder, then bump it until the F on the flywheel appears in the inspection port. A comment - on one of my B's this is the bottom, and the other it is the side. Looking at the mag with the cover off, the timing log is a bump in the upper left corner, the rotor should be pointed at this. Holding the mag so that the breaker contacts are just open, install the mag and lock it in. If it won't assemble, you need to rotate the drive gear until it will. Yes the order is 1-2-4-3, #1 terminal is the one at the timing lug, and the #1 cylinder is in front. If you can't figure out which one is #2, then rotate the engine with the crank or starter and see which way the gear turns, it will go from 1 to 2 to 4 to 3. Good luck.
