Trying to determine age of my WD but can't find the serial number.

Having searched the archives, it is clear that it's supposed to be on a vertical machined surface on the back of the left brake housing. It isn't. In fact the only machined surface there is the one for the left rock arm support.

Me thinks transmission/differential/brakes housing might be a replacement. Can't find any numbers on it at all.

Did find the following numbers - perhaps some one can help.

Left Final Drive AM-3634-6 H (inside of) C 1 6-23-48
Right Final Drive AM-3634-6 H (inside of) C 1 7-21-48
Left Axle Housing AM-3635-5 H (inside of) C 1 7-30-48
Right Axle Housing AM-3635-5 H (inside of) C 1
Right Side of Engine Block U3019-31
Left Side of Engine Block (stamped) 225364GA (no 'WD' or '45' in front of the number)

I also found stamped in 1/2 in. characters in two places on top of left frame rail the number 91060 (right rail has no numbers). Any chance this is the ser. no.?

Are those dates on some of the castings? If so, might I guess a manufacture date in late 1948 or perhaps early 1949?

I have found the date on the left brake housing with the date of 6-24-48. The rear tire size is 11-28. I still can't find any ser. No. just part No. Being made in 1948 is this a WD WD45?

Dennis, I suppose it is possible that there is no number on that housing if it's a replacement. There are engines without serial Nos. I have one. I would go back and do as Brian(pa) suggests: scrape the paint off real well. I've used a stiff wire brush and some lacquer thinner to help remove the paint and crud. The serial No. is located on a "horizontal" surface just below the brake spring hole and above the brake adjusting bolt/locknut. Also, as Brian(pa) suggests, look on the RH side of the left brake inspection hole, under the cover. Assuming the engine is original, I would guess your estimate of '48 or '49 is probably correct. My oldest tractor (a '50 WD) has engine serial #WD272805GA and tractor serial #WD66400.

I've brushed and scraped all about the top and rear of the left brake housing and cannot find any numbers. Even the machined flat surface between the brake spring and brake adjust nut does not exist.

Would you happen to know whether engines were installed sequentially according to SN. The difference between your engine SN and mine is 47,441. If I subtract that from your tractor SN I get 18959, which would make it a '49.

I think I have enough info now to order some gaskets.

Unfortunately, there is not a direct correlation between engine & tractor serial #s. As I understand it, the stationary, combine and grader engines may all have used the same sequence of engine #s. From the few sets of #s I've been able to compare, there appears to be a difference of around 2,000 to 5,000 per year. Anyway, you're right; you certainly have it identified sufficiently to order parts for it.

dennis the date has to be there. scrap away any paint and crud. also pull your left brake cover under the cover on the seat side the # should also be stamped there.
