B Thermostat

I was reading in the I&T about checking the thermostat. Since my B runs cold in the winter, I though this might b ea good thing. When I tore the engine down (I'm rebuilding the tractor), I cannot find a thermostat. The housing whre I would assume it would go has a plate that bolts to it with two bolts, then bolts to the top of the head wiht two bolts. It has the temp gage tap and the upper rad hose nipple on it. the other option is the water pump and that also bolts direct to the block. Can anyone tellme where the thermostat goes and whati it looks like? Thanks!

The thermostat helps the engine warm up faster, but it opens at 130 degrees, so it will not bring the engine up to the 170 degree operating temperature. I have to cover part of the radiator to get mine up to 170 degrees.

Right where you thought it should go. You take the two smaller bolts out clean up the plate and inside of the housing, put the thermostat up in the housing, new gasket, plate back in place, small bolts in and tight, the two long bolts fasten the housing to the head. Now your good to go.

Interesting - I've had 3 of thesee apart and none have had it. Maybe I'll put on in this time to see if it helps my temp control. Thanks much

That used to be the thing to do. If it over heated first take the thermostat out and see if that was the problem. Then it was probably to much bother to replace it. Dad took them out in the summer and put them back in the winter, if he got around to it.
