I had the distributer cap off my 1945 WC and now the engine will not start. Although I thought I was careful I'm suspicious that I have a wire crossed. Can anyone help with a discription of which wire goes to which plug?

If you didn't move the distributor and get it out of time, then make sure that #2 wire is clock ways from #1 wire and that #4 wire is next clock ways from #2. If this is ok then lift off the cap and crank the engine untill the rotor points to where #1 terminal is located just before the points open. Then open the points with the switch on and you should get a spark, if you do then pull the coil wire out of the cap and hold it close to the block and open the points again and if you get a spark from the coil wire check the flywheel for the timeing mark, it should be visable if it is in time. If you dont have spark at any of these places check for power at the coil and clean the points. If you do have spark every where you should I would suspect a lack of fuel.

#1 is at the front of the engine? If so thats the way I have it wired. This thing was running fine until I pulled the coil and distributer cap to paint them. Now it will not start and backfires after cranking for a while. Any ideas?

Did you actually "paint" the distributor cap? If so, could the paint be causing a short in the high tension (secondary) "fire"?

Brian is right. The paint will cause a ground completion and will allow the spark to go on the path of least resistence which is the paint on the outside of either the coil or the cap and or both. It is the same trick I used to pull on friends cars by drawing a lead pencil lind down the spark plug and this would cause it to miss or draw a line between the cap towers and caused the same .
