CA hand clutch

I have to renew the final drive clutch on my '53 CA. The I&T manual says to "remove snap ring from shaft; then press or pull clutch from shaft". I can't see any snap ring! Is it hiding behind the bronze bushing? How do I get the bushing out? What sort of puller or press do I use to get it off the shaft? If anyone has seen how one of these come apart I would be really grateful for any advice.

:My hand clutch went to pieces a few years ago. I got the parts from a salvage yard, this was the easy part. I got stuck like you are now. I took it to a shop who had the equipment to pull the old mess out. You need presses and pullers that most places don't have. It cost me about $80 for labor but I had no other way to get the tractor running again. sorry for the bad news.

Actually, the statement about removing the snap ring is a misprint. Onece the whole final drive assembly is removed from the tractor, it can simply be lifted off the shaft. Of course it is probably rusted. In that case, use lots of penetrating oil and lift on the clutch while using a brass punch to pund on the axle shaft. The use of a brass punch will ensure you don't damage the shaft. I had my CA apart last year and put in some new parts.

I soaked it for 2 weeks, put a puller on it and broke the spring cover! If I take the pinion shaft bearing retainer off can I then drive the pinion shaft out the wheel end of the housing and through the clutch too? How big a hammer can I use without wrecking something else?
