Just brought home a model C. It hasnt been run for a year or 2 (or so I was told). When we tried to turn it over, it turned over very slowly. We plan to change out all the fluids(gas, oil, water). Any suggestions as to how to get this old workhorse running...We are ordering a manual, but would like to be working on it while we wait. Thanks in advance

DJ,
The first thing you need to do is to thoroughly clean every electrical connection in the starting motor circuit. This includes the ground cable and the front of the starter motor and it's mounting flange in the bellhousing. Then, be sure the battery cables are at least 1 Gague copper wire and have no corrosion on them anywhere. Charge the battery overnight and I think your problems will be gone. If they aren't, check the brushes and commutator in the starter motor. If the brushes are worn down to less than 3/4", I would have the starter rebuilt. This should include new bushings at both ends of the rotor so it won't drag on the field coils. This will probably cost $75-$100 depending on where you take it and how much it needs, but you will probably never have to do more than replace the brushes once more in your lifetime.

My 2, Phil

Forgot one thing. Check the internal connection of the stud on the starter for the battery cable. These things can crack loose from the wires inside and have to be resoldered or welded somehow. If the stud wiggles or turns without a lot of pressure, check it carefully or have a shop check it.

thanks for the help Phil. I have checked/cleaned all external connections. I could not get the starter out. Is there a trick? Thanks again

DJ,
Starter is probably rusted in there pretty good. I don't have any experience with removing a starter from a C as my B is hand start and my RC is completely different. However, the starter on the RC is held in with a bolt that comes in from the top (or side, I can't remember for sure) and has a point on the end that fits into a groove on the nose of the starter. Remove this bolt (if the C is so equipped) and try to rock the starter from side to side. If that doesen't work try a few blows from a dead blow hammer. Don't use a regular steel head hammer, you could break some very expensive parts! A good, heavy rubber mallet may work, but it'll probably be too light. Apply some penetrating oil around the joint and let it sit overnight and try again. Patience will win. Heat may speed things up, but only heat the bellhousing, not the starter. If you can get a crowbar between the starter and bellhousing, a little prying might help, but again, be careful.

Phil

The C and B both have a set screw just like the RC and WC only it comes in from the side. Lots of times due to corrosion the starter doesn't make good electrical contact in this area and causes the starter to turn slow. I cleaned the mounting area on my C and now the 6 volt system spins it over great.

If the set screw is an original one it has a long taper and has to be removed. Most of mine have been made from bolts and have a rounded end and only have to be backed out of the starter.
