: : Lincon Welding has good book on arc welding,Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding,I have 12th edition, good refrence sourse.Vert welding is practice, rod, heat range, application.Vert down is looks only or light metal.Vert up for penatration, strength.Fast freeze rod flux important.wipping rod for larger gaps, wire feed works good on clean metal with right heat / feed rates. Check with welding supply house for rod handbooks good info low/no cost.

Reorient for down-hand if you can.

Otherwise, if you have access to a wire-feed
or mig welder with adequate capacity, use it.
It will make gravity less of a problem.
