Carb rebuild, is the float floating!

My float seems to be sticking after a rebuild of the carberator. What is the best method to test the float before I put it back on the tractor?

Jake,
Remove the float from the carb and shake it to see if there's any liquid in it. If there is, boil it in a pan of water to force the liquid out and solder the hole shut. Use only as much solder as necessary so it doesen't make the float too heavy. If it's been off for a while, set it in a pan of water or gas to see if it will remain afloat. If it does remain floating, check to be sure the float isn't dragging on the side of the bowl or the gasket between the carb halves. Might have to trim the inside edge of the gasket, or bend the arm on the float slightly to correct the drag.

This is probably obvious, but how do you check if it is rubbing? As I understand it, I have to put the carb back together and I can't see or tell if it is rubbing. What am I missing?

Jake, Phil gave you most of it. To check for binding, rubbing, sticking, slowly turn carb over repeatedly, and listen for any scraping sounds, or anything other than the float falling unobstructed. You can even blow into the fuel inlet to make sure that the needle valve is open right side up, closed upside down. To check a float for leaks, heat a pan of water to boiling & remove from heat. Immerse float in hot water & allow time necessary for the temp to heat the air in the float, & if you have a leak you should be able to detect air bubbles emerging from the hole. Don't forget to check float bowl vent, if it's plugged you could get the same symptoms as a float sticking, sunken, or bad needle valve.
