I am looking at a '58 model D-17 gas tractor, wide front, power steering. Tractor is in very clean with new bottom end in motor, fairly straight sheet metal and decent fenders, lots of new parts(alt, starter, regulator, tune up, new front tires and 1 back tire) and no significant visable or mechanical flaws. Tractor was recently repainted w/new decals but guy didn't do the best job on the paint.

Was wondering what a tractor like this is worth and what to look out for as far as any present or future mechanical problems.

Also wondering about what is involved in using regular 3 point hitch implements on the quick hitch(I have a 850 Ford with a Massey 6 foot mower, small hay rake, 6 foot blade and pig pole).

It sounds like the tractor is in above average condition. A ballpark price in ave condition is $2700. With power steering and alot of new parts a good price would be $3200 - $3400. Make sure it doesn't pop out of any gear while driving. Also make sure the hydraulic fluid level stays up and isn't leaking into the trans causing the trans to show over full. These are common problems. Most good 3pt conversion kits are around $400. The D17 is a very popular and strong tractor. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, Gene. Looks like I got a pretty good deal. Tractor plus single action New Idea front loader with blade, pull type brush hog, fairly new 3 point rock rake, and both types of draw bars for $3500. I'd rate the tractor a 7 or 8 if a 1 is a step away from the boneyard and 10 a show tractor. 6 or 8 small dents, minimal rust on one fender and no apparent mechanical problems other than it needs a tie rod end or two and a little work to the steering shaft u-joints and the bearing where it goes through the case. Impressive thing is it is over 40 years old and no leaks. Can't say that about my 850 Ford and its probably a 8 1/2 or 9 and only two years older.

I don't know much about the quick hitch system, but it appears to have at least part of the conversion because it has a set of arms with ball sockets like a normal 3 point hitch coming from where the draw bar mounts and hooked to the snap mounts which I guess is where a the quick hitch implements hook to, but I can't seem to figure out how to hook up the top link. The guy I bought it from had a bale spear mounted on the rear when I tried it out but I never noticed how he had it hooked up.

I guess this tractor would be a Series 1, since it's a 58 model. Did these models come with an expanded metal grille or did they have the square mesh type like the others I have seen?

Thanks again, Gene

I asked the guy when I went to pick up the implements and he told me that the top link hooks to the braket on the bar that goes between the lower arms. I wonder what kind of conversion this is? I don't know how thats going to work out with the implements I have, but it seems like it would be too low. I may have to get one of the top link brackets or fabricate on myself after I get something hooked up to it and see how it works. It looks like the only thing substantial enough to mount it too is the rear end bolts, but I'm guessing it would be some lopsided affair to clear the transport valve.
