Am looking to buy A C to pull at least a 5 shank, 4 ft. chisel, 8-10 inches deep. Wanted a WD 45 or D17 but am concerned about power. Any sugestions?

I don't think a 45 would pull that. We pull an 11 foot chisel about that deep with 130 horse tractor and can be given serious fits with it. Those things pull a LOT harder than a moldboard plow of the same width. I'd go with the D-17 for starters. You might not get that deep unless the soil is in good shape.

I agree with Aaron, I pull a 9 shank chisel with a 1066 and it is not nearly enough tractor, so I don't end up too deep or get some of the really hard spots. I doubt that a D-17 will do the job unless VERY heavily weighted and in a low gear, and that makes for drive train longevity concerns. John

I also agree, my grandfather use to pull his 10 foot chisel with case 830 and he bought a new 1175 in the 70's sometime and the dealer asked him if he wanted to trade for a bigger chisel but my gandpa said that he could make that 1175 grunt with that 10' chisel but the dealer didn't believe him belive me those suckers pull hard

i've seen guys use 5 shanks on a 50-60 hp but they used them more like a high clearance field cultivator. if you are wanting to go deep ,use a subsoiler. i have a jd field cultivater for such work.and an ac subsoiler to do the deep stuff.and the hard pan can be made with a chisel plow as well as a moldboard . plus you will probably need to disc ahead of chisel plow orbushhog to shred corn stalks. unless you put a plow coulter in front of each shank which will add weight to your already heavy load. good luck ! by the way i have stalled 150 hp with a 10 ' chisel.
