Was not reading a charge at ampmeter on AC model CA that just rebuilt (rewired by book).Took advice from an archive post (thanks Brian) and jumped across cutout with belt off pulley. Generator turned like a motor but slowly (real slow).I understood the post to say this meant the cutout was bad. Took Delco generator and cutout to shop in town. Said armiture was bad. Reinstalled generator and also went to 2/0 cables to starter and ground from battery. Now ampmeter reads 22 at slow idle and 28 at high idle.(My book said it should read 3 with switch in and 10 with switch all the way out.) Now concerned about the 6-volt battery (I now read 9-volts across terminals on battery). Never had this problem before. Should I be happy or should I wear a face shield due to battery being just ahead of steering wheel. Thanks, Dale .

If the generator is originial it has an adjustable third brush that you adjust to control the maxium output. Turn it down or wear face shield and body armor.

Is it possible to read the generator output with one battery lead disconnected? Any idea if the field is connected to ground?

Your ammeter will read higher than the book says if the battery is not fully charged but should taper down as it becomes charged. This is a function of the internal resistance of the battery increasing as it becomes charged. Of course if you have a later set-up with a voltage/current regulator it should vary depending on the setting of the regulator. Nine volts is not excessive when charging on a 6v battery. The voltage must be higher in order to charge it. In a 12 volt system you usually get 14 to 18 volts when charging.
