WC Won't Start

1940 WC, 6v electric start. Spins over freely then catches, probably at the full compression point, then spins free, etc. After about 3 of these it backfires through the carb. Continued cranking gets nothing or an occasional backfire. Pulled the cover, rockers are moving, cold lash ok, all intake valves are coming up to the same height. Tractor ran good then started to miss, acts like a sticky valve, but now I can't get it to start to troubleshoot. I'm thinking I've got a leaky valve. Or is it possible that my crank speed is too low and/or the mag is slightly advanced, causing it to fier with a valve open? In the next few weeks I'm intending to put a compression gage on it, and maybe a leakdown checker, but any pre-test advice would be appreciated. By the way, the carb is rebuilt, new needle/seat/float, and rough set. Thnaks for your help.

If you have not had the mag off, I would clean the points and reset the gap at .020. While the cover is off the points go ahead and check the timeing. get number one cylinder up on top dead center on the compression stroke. I do this by first takeing all the plugs out, put my thumb over number plug hole and turn the engine over untill I feel pressure and then watch the flywheel for the mark as I inch the engine over little by little untill the mark is centered. Close to that should be a line marked FIRE. With this in the center go to the mag and make that the points are just ready to open. They don't want to be open just ready to open. You can check this by rotating the mag back and fourth and watch the points. Make sure the rotor is pointing to number one plug wire. Check that the plug wires go clockways 1-2-4-3 from the rotor cap to the plugs. A lack of fuel will also cause it to backfire so make sure that you have gas to the carb and make sure that the gaskets seal good at the carb and head. A cracked manifold can cause this kind of problem. While the engine is cranking put the palm of your hand over the carb intake and you should have a very strong suction.
Timeing or fuel would be my bet. Good luck and let us know what you find.
