D-14 3rd gear slips out

My working D-14: I put a new Power Director clutch in and now I have to hold it in 3rd. I can't see anything wrong. I studied the archives, and see lots of 3rd gear problems, but no solutions. Any help out there? No A-C mechanics left in the Ft. Worth/Cleburne TX area that I can find.

Bob, This is a normal problem with all constant mesh Allis Chalmers Units weather they be CA, WD-45, D-14, D-17, and D-15. To engage the gears a collar was shifted to the gear. The collar engaged splines on the gear to be engaged. One of the problems is that over years the splines have worn and are rounded. This rounding from the original square causes the gear to "kick out" from time to time. The only solution to this is to replace (a) inspect the gear splines then if necessary replace them and (b) check the shifter collar and if worn replace it. This is an expensive proposition since the tractor has to be split and the transmission gears replaced. Another problem could be, but I don't think this is it, is that end play developes in the gears. In this case the transmission usually locks rather than pops out of gear. However, this again can be corrected by splitting the tractor and replacing the main snap ring with a larger one. It is more prevelant on WD-45's but could be a problem with the D-14.
