I was looking for information on a Allis Chalmers M-7 snow tractor. Serial number 33,Delivery date 4-8-44. Parts list SNL 194, maintenance manual T/M 9-1774, operation manual T/M 9-774. I would like to restore this tractor but I have no information to go on. This tractor has ski's on the front and tracts on the back. In the blizzard of 1949 this tractor was also known as a "weasel".

My name is Gunnar, and I'm writing from Norway I need some help to find information about the following machinery/manufacturer:

FOR M-7-SNOW TRAKTOR SNL-G-194
Manufactured
ALLIS-CHALMERS MFG. CO
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN

The above text is written on grey labels on each and every body-part of a snowmobile that a friend of mine here in Norway build during World War II
(or directly after). (I reckon I've got some pictures of it someplace) All its parts came from American-made engine- and body-parts, that was
transported to Norway during the second world war. What we'd like to know, is what the original tractor (or machinery that these parts came from)
looked like? Would you have any idea?

I'd love to get some more information related to the M-7 and this manufacturer - could anyone help me? Is there any photos/pictures of it?

Thanx!

Hi Henry, I have # 103 myself, she runs sweet but is missing a few parts which I have been aquiring and a friend Gordon ( who also wants it )has been aquirng too. I also know of several people with pristine M-7's if you wanted to contact them. I was thinking of starting a registry of this vehicle only as there were only 291 of them made according to Fred Crimon's book US MILITARY TRACKED VEHICLES. There is also an obscure reference to the snowtractor in Fred Crismon's US MILITARY WHEELED VEHICLES book. I've never heard of the M-7 called a weasel but you never know. With tandem seating and a tractor front end in half-track configuration with a Willys four for engine it would be hard to confuse the two. I have the TM-774 manual, and located the TM-1774 in the library of congress but have yet to purchase it. Do you have the TM-1774 and is it much different than the tm-774? there are links to pictures of it in use with the 500 something Mountain Battalion ( you'll have to excuse my memory as Gordon is the expert on this stuff ) and I have a short video of an M-7 in a drag race with a weasel in deep snow during army comparisons. The M-7 won, but the weasel is far more manoeuverable in tight confines, ie:bushes. I have pictures of mine and nice looking ones:-) if anyone should want .

Hello Henry, The original "Weasel" snow tracor was built by Studebaker for the military and later a large number fell into civilian hands. They were a tracked vehicle with a differential type steering with no skis. They were well built and rugged. This came from the Studebaker design, another fine American company that became mismanaged and forced out of business by the Big Three. Can you scan a picture of the Allis-Chalmers snowcat and put it on the site. Sure would enjoy seeing it !!

There is a picture, a detailed drawing of the track mechanism and other info on pages 66 & 67 of Norm Swinford's book: "Allis-Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985". Interesting machine!

Henry, I've never heard of one of those, so I can't help you with any information, but I would love to see pictures of it? Is there any way you can send me some? Darrell
