D12:8 volt to 12 volt

I have a D12 with an 8 volt system. I would like to convert it to 12 volt. What do I need to make this happen?

First off you need to find out what you have. Early D-10/12 were 6V, positive ground. Starting about mid-1961 they changed to 12V positive ground. Never any 8V. Genessee Products (see link at "Parts & Supplies" page at this site) can fix you up with what you need to convert to 12V negative ground.

The 8 volt battery is a "souped-up" battery to give a little extra umph to the starter while still utilizing the rest of the 6 volt system. These batteries are available in places such as Central Tractor. Norm is probably right and when I finish restoring my best WD-45 I will probably keep it 6-volt for originality. However, The WD & WD-45 I use all the time have been converted to 12 volt. They start without hesitation even at sub-zero weather. If you're sure you want to convert, click on the "Article Archives" section to the left of this screen, scroll down to "Maintenance and Mechanical Information" and you'll find a wealth of information on the subject.
