Shims on connecting rods

I have trouble getting the shims to stay in place as I assemble the bearing cap on the connecting rod. I am going through all of the bearing checking clearance with the plastiguage and find it clumsy. Is there some adhesive that won't screw up my readings by making my shims too thick???? I am starting out with four shims and will eliminate one until I have the .003" clearance.

Thanks

Whenever I do an overhaul on one of these, I get new rod bolts, then take the rods to an automotive machine shop and have the rods reconditioned without the shims. Now you know your rods are straight, the bores are round, and assembly is a breeze. It cost me $28 plus rod bolts last time. In my opinion, cheap peace of mind, that probably stems from my race engine days. Have a G'day. TED

Good old chassis grease always worked fine for me, it is sticky enough, will squeeze out of the cap and dissolves when hot. Always has worked fine
