I'm looking at purchase of 1980 8550 with 4100 hrs. Looks in good shape, need advice on trouble areas, durability, experinces.

The Allis Chalmers 8550 was a good old tractor but it had some problems. One was the engine RPM was set to high and a long engine life was not usually the case. At 4100 hrs I would hope the engine was rebuilt recently,if not it is a major expence because not many 731 engines are around and the overhaul kits are expensive. If you do buy the tractor and you have to go through the engine take the injector pump off and have it gone through by a good diesel shop, have them turn the RPMs down and the torque up, and have the horse power set the same but at a lower RPM and your engine will run alot longer. Another area to look at is the articulating joint make sure it is tight and not cracked. also check if the drive lines have been updated. Other than that they were good
