D-17 Overhaul

I have two D17's that are in need of overhaul. I am right in the middle of one,with the engine out and torn down, head completely redone with new valve train and all machining complete. Just dropped off the block for hot tanking and crank for grinding today.
My question is this. The engine was completely seized when I got the tractor, so I was not able to turn it over and align all the valve timing marks, cam-crank-distributer before I dissassembled the motor, so I am not sure how the marks should align for re-assembly. The manual I got from the dealer is not real clear on re-assembly, either. When I get to re-assembling the engine after the crank and pistons are installed,I assume that I bring #1 piston up on top-dead-center on the firing stroke and install the cam and distributer with their respective gear marks aligned? I know that obviously the valves have to be closed and the rotor pointed towards #1 to have the valve timing correct. Maybe I should find a clearer manual, or maybe the valve timing will be self -evident when I get that far. Open to suggestions.

look at the crank and cam gears ,you should see a dot on the point of one theeth and at the bottom
of the V on the other gear.that will time your crank to the cam. ROBERT

Kevin,
Sounds like you have it right. If the cam gears are properly aligned, adjust the dist. to point to #1 and timing will be right. You might want to invest $20 in an I&T manual to see if they have a clearer description for reassembly. Some things you will only find in these manuals as well. Descriptions are somewhat different than the factory manuals and may be more understandable. If a Diesel, you're gonna need more help than I can give you.
