WD vs WD45

Thinking of buying a WD NFE with hand clutch. Owner is not sure if it is WD or WD45. What is the best QUICK way to tell (visual) diff. between WD and WD45. Someone told me the 45 has a curved gear shift. Any ideas?

A-C began installing the "tall" head on WDs after ENGINE Ser. #WD289000 which is very early; say around 1950. The change from straight shifter to curved shifter took place with WD TRACTOR Ser.#WD127007. Production of the WD-45 began in mid '53 with TRACTOR Ser.#WD146607. ALL WD & WD-45 TRACTOR Ser.#s begin with WD. The WD ENGINE Ser. #s begin with WD- & the WD-45 ENGINE Ser.#s begin with 45-. However, it is not uncommon to find a WD which has had it's engine (or short block) replaced with the more powerful WD-45 version. I have a WD-45 with an engine with no ser. #. Apparently factory replacement blocks were not numbered. Others on this site tell of the same thing. I have also seen posts on this site telling of installation of D-17 engines and engines from combines, etc. ' nother whole series of ENGINE Ser. #s!!! Generally, the Tractor Serial # will be the determining factor. Prior to #WD146607 will be a WD. Over the years a lot of things can happen. A friend of mine has, what in all ways is an early WD EXCEPT the TRACTOR Ser.# would indicate it's a WD-45. At some time in it's history, the differential housing was apparently changed. Is this more than you ever wanted to know about WDs & WD-45s?? Brian G.
