My Allis B has been sitting mostly dissembled for almost 2 years now as I painted it and made repairs. The engine itself was not opened as it ran fine and didn't smoke. I did have to install a new water pump and thermostat and patch the radiator. I wasn't supposed to take so long but it seems there is always something that has to be done before a hobby. Now it is approaching time to fire it up again. I put a small squirt of oil in each cylinder and turned the engine over by had a few times last night as I put the ignition system back on. I have to put the gas tank and wiring on next but it should be ready to start by the weekend. I know in all this time the oil is completely drained into the pan and that bothers me. Any tips on things I can do to make this less traumatic for the old girl?

Thanks,
Chris

Oiling the cylinders is a good start. If you have access to a used freon canister or other container that cn hold 10-15 PSI you can pre lube the engine and prime the pump. You will need an outlet at the bottom of the container that can be attached to the 1/8 NPT threaded hole for the oil pressure gage and a way to put air into the top of the container. Fill the container with a few qts. of oil and run a hose from the bottom to the oil pressure gage hole. Pressurize the tank with 10-15 psi air. This will fill all of the oil galleries and prime the pump. Of course, I would change the oil and filter before doing this. When the engine starts you will have full pressure immediately. Another way is to simply tow the tractor long enough to build up oil pressure before trying to actually start it. These methods have worked well for me. Good Luck. Paul

I'm not real familiar with the "B" in particular but I know a few tricks from reading about restoring vintage aircraft that have been in storage for decades.

They make a cart that warms and circulates engine oil through a stagnant engine, for about 8 to 12 hours, before they even turn it over. You did that some when you squirted oil in the pistons but the bearings are still dry.

You might drain the oil and replace it with warm oil just before you start the old girl up. Even a light bulb under the oil pan overnight will help. Warm oil gets into the small places faster. If the shaft to the oil pump is accessible, you can turn it over with an electric drill motor and circulate oil without the engine turning. Often, the oil pump is turned by the distributor shaft. Pulling the distributor allows you to see what you have to make to let your drill motor drive the oil pump.

These two things (warm oil and priming the engine by truning the oil pump manually) should get that Allis back in shape like she never set at all.

Good luck.

Chris,
You did exactly what is needed with the oil in the cylinders. The oil pump will probably pick up pretty quick and that will take care of the rest.
Keep an eye on the oil pressure to be sure the pump hasn't lost it's prime.

Phil
