I HAVE BEEN TOLD TWO DIFFRENT THINGS ON D-17 HP.
ONE SAYES 51HP AND ONE SAYES 38 HP .WHO IS RIGHT?

Actually, Mark, they both could be if they were talking about different
things. In the Nebraska tests, the D17 was tested in a variety of different ways. It was tested on the belt and on the drawbar and it was tested in every
gear and at varying loads. The resultant horsepower ranged from 30.16 to 51.14
on the belt at maximum load. The 30.16 came in first low range and probably was
so low because of slippage on the drawbar pull. When Nebraska corrected for atmospheric pressure (engines have more horsepower at sea level than they do in
Nebraska), the maximum belt horsepower was estimated at 53.43 and maximum drawbar
horsepower was 47.06. The engine horsepower is probably 3 to 5 more than the 53
which is what lead Allis to advertise the D17 as being in the 60 hp class.

So who is right? I like the guy who says 51. The other guy probably owns 3 John
Deere's.

The 51 horsepower is correct.
