Any Model Allis For Me???

The only thing I know about Allis Chalmers tractors is that my late father used to work for the company.

I've been shopping for a utility tractor to use on 22 acres of woods in West Virginia mountains. Need it for hauling firewood, snow plowing and dressing the woods road, establishing a large vegetable garden, maybe some bush hogging, etc. May want to get a small front-end loader. I've been looking at Oliver Super 55/550s, MF 35/135s with live pto and hydr. at about $3,000. Low center of gravity seems like a good idea.

I wonder whether there is an Allis that will fit the bill? I see Bs and Cs for less money, but I don't know anything about their features. I have read people complain about no low/slow gearing in some model Allis' -- which would be a major disadvantage on my mountain hills.

Based on my uses, is there some model(s) Allis in this price range (or less!) that would suit my needs? Is there a web site where I could go to find out the standard equip. on various models made by Allis?

Thanks very much for your help.

Bob

Although I'm an AC fan, it's going to be hard to beat a Oliver 550 or MF 135 with an AC in the $3000 range. Bs and Cs are too small for what you want to do. A CA could do a lot of it, and is pretty nimble in the woods, but has live PTO and hydraulics only by virtue of the hand clutch, which is not as nice as the setup on the other models you named. A post-1961 D-10 or D-12 would be a possibility (they have about 30 HP, true independent PTO and hydraulics and a low center of gravity). For more power, you'd be looking at a D-15 (but has only sort-of live PTO/Hydraulics via the power director). One advantage a AC would have, at least over a MF, is traction due to better weight distribution.

I have a Model B that I really like, but my land is totally flat. The Model B has a high center of gravity that I would not feel comfortable using in hilly country. Maybe a "C" would be better because it is wider, but I would be leary of a "B."
